Let the future flow in Uganda
With clean drinking water, the lives of entire communities change. Children go back to school, illnesses decrease, and hope grows with every drop. It is precisely this vision that drives our new initiative: the Lighthouse Project Future Yumbe in Uganda. With joyful activism and a clear mission, we are launching the biggest campaign in our history.
This has already happened:
WAS SPILLED FROM A CANISTER
120 LITERS OF WATER
Previously, the 182 residents of Irakia, Yumbe, had to walk to the far-away Kotzi River. What arrived back home was often just a single 20-liter canister for the entire household—to use for drinking, cooking, washing, and everything else. In May 2024, the hand pump was installed. Today, each household has access to over 120 liters daily, and the children are back in the classroom regularly. What is remarkable is what the community has made of it: an elected water committee collects monthly contributions and has since built up a repair reserve of 574,000 UGX. Two years, and not a single breakdown. Today, Irakia is considered a role model in the region.
DALAGA HAS WAITED FOR A LONG TIME.
HERE WE GO.
Dalaga, Yumbe lives from tobacco farming. 880 people, 134 households, a community that organizes its daily life around a single question: When will we get water? Women in particular bear this burden – and they know best what needs to change. That is exactly what is happening now. Together with Welthungerhilfe, Viva con Agua Uganda is bringing a deep well hand pump to Dalaga. The community itself calculates what this means: time for the fields, time for the children, yields that last even during dry spells.
A look into the future
This is what is supposed to happen in 2027:
5 new boreholes
10 rehabilitated water pumps
2 water supply systems in Bidibidi
Ceramic filters for 200 households
75 trained local water caretakers
This is what will change:
Shorter distances to water points
Fewer diseases thanks to clean drinking water
Girls who go to school – even during their periods
Pumps that are repaired by the people of Bidibidi themselves
