The Viva con Agua Lighthouse Project:

With joyful activism and a clear mission, we are launching an unprecedented campaign. We are collecting 2.65 million euros to sustainably improve the lives of 300,000 people in the Yumbe District of Uganda. This project is our major project for the coming years and shows how big we can think together.

The current challenge in Yumbe District

Yumbe is located in northern Uganda and is a region where many crises overlap. A total of around 945,000 people live there, including over 200,000 refugees. The cohabitation of host communities and those seeking protection brings many challenges with it.

Currently, access to water averages only 12.5 liters per person per day. In some areas, it is even as low as 8.8 liters. However, the humanitarian standard specifies 20 liters. This lack of water means that families have to make difficult decisions every day: Is there enough water for cooking? Can we wash our hands? Often, hygiene measures are the first to go, which drastically increases the risk of illness.

Our approach for sustainable change

We do not want to help in the short term. Our goal is to implement a scalable, climate-resilient, and sustainable system of water supply (WASH). With the targeted 2.65 million euros, we are not only funding infrastructure but also strengthening the entire local community.

Concretely, this means:

• new wells and repair of existing installations

• stable water systems, even during dry seasons

• training of local water committees

• regular water quality controls

• close cooperation with authorities and communities

In short: individual water points become a functioning system.

When access to water is less insecure, people's day-to-day lives stabilize noticeably. Girls miss school less often because they do not have to search for water for hours. Waiting times at dispensing points are cut short, which simultaneously reduces conflicts between population groups.

Let's write history together

The task is great, but our community is louder and more powerful. With 2.65 million euros, we are laying the foundation for a permanent water supply in Yumbe. We create inspiring places and opportunities for community involvement, where every contribution counts.
