Quick Facts about Uganda
Developments in Uganda
In recent years, Uganda has made significant progress in the energy sector. In September 2024, the Karuma Hydropower Plant, the largest power generation facility in the country, was officially commissioned. This 600-megawatt power plant on the Nile was financed with a loan of 1.4 billion US dollars from the China Exim Bank and constructed by the Sinohydro Corporation. With the commissioning of the Karuma Hydropower Plant, Uganda's total power generation capacity increases to over 2,000 megawatts. This project aims to provide millions of households with affordable electricity, thus ensuring sustainable, clean energy for the development of East Africa.
Despite these advances, many communities still face challenges regarding access to clean drinking water and adequate sanitation. Organizations like “Viva con Agua” are actively working to close these gaps. Since 2009, “Viva con Agua” has been supporting water projects in Uganda and has achieved significant success with the “One WASH” program since 2021 in the West Nile and Karamoja regions. This program aims to provide at least 45,000 people with access to clean drinking water, basic sanitation, and hygiene. Previous measures have included drilling 16 new wells, rehabilitating 107 existing wells, and distributing 728 ceramic water filters to households and facilities. Additionally, 400 women have been supported with menstrual hygiene kits. These efforts contribute to sustainably improving the quality of life in Uganda and ensuring access to essential services for all citizens.
